What is Nostr?

Nostr is a simple, decentralised messaging protocol that stands for Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays. On Nostr, you have one identity and one follower graph that can bring with you to any Nostr client.

The real magic is that Nostr gives apps a common language to talk to each other. The most popular clients are social media apps offering a similar experience to X such as Primal, Damus and Amethyst.

When you create a Nostr account you are given:

  • Public Key: A public username (npub...) that allows anyone to find your profile
  • Private Key: A secret password (nsec...) that you can use to log in to any Nostr client

Other key concepts within Nostr are:

  • Notes: Posts that can contain plain text, an image, a video, a link, or other stuff
  • Relays: Servers that broadcast notes to any clients connected to that relay
  • Clients: Apps where you connect your keys and query relays for notes you care about

As of August 2024, Fountain is a Nostr client. After creating a Fountain account by providing an email address, you can either create a new Nostr account or connect an existing one. Connecting Nostr is not mandatory, but it is recommended as it allows you to experience all of Fountain's social features.

Once you have connected Nostr:

  • You can share your boosts, comments and clips to Nostr and other modern podcast apps
  • Your activity will get seen by more listeners on Fountain as well as users on other Nostr clients
  • People will be able to interact with your activity by liking, replying or zapping (i.e. sending you a micropayment)
  • People on Fountain and other Nostr clients will be able to follow you to see your latest activity
  • If you're connecting an existing Nostr account, you can bring your follower graph with you to Fountain
